Phases

Oil on Baltic birch cutouts and relief carved.
160 x 96 inches.
Phases is inspired by the lifespan of a single agave century plant. This plant takes anywhere from eight to thirty years to fully mature. Once the plant reaches maturity it grows a central stalk, then blooms. Their stalks can grow up to six inches a day and can reach soaring heights of 20 feet. Once the plant flowers and the seeds set, it immediately starts to wither and die. In this piece I am honoring this intense cycle of life, and recognizing these phases that have been mirrored in my own life experiences. Through the constant transitions of growth, blooming, death, and rebirth.
